List of Major Archbishops of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following list brings together the archbishops and, since 2005, the major archbishops of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia and thus the leading clergy of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church .

When Emperor Leopold I liberated Transylvania from the Turks in 1687 , he first brought Jesuits to missionary work in this area. But the Orthodox Christians stuck to their rites and their bishop Teofil Seremi (1692–1697). Under his successor Atanasie Anghel (1697–1713) an agreement was reached that led to the union of the Oriental Church of Transylvania with Rome, and in 1725 to the establishment of the diocese of Făgăraş.
