Bishop Ioan Giurgiu Patachi (Nemes Pataky)

Ioan Giurgiu Patachi OSBM , also Constantin Nemes de Patak , (* 1682 in Strâmbu-Băiuț , Szolnok-Doboka County , Principality of Transylvania ; † October 29, 1727 in Făgăraş ), was the Romanian-Greek Catholic bishop of Făgăraş .

Life

Ioan Giurgiu was born to Romanian parents in Strâmbu-Băiuț ( Hungarian : Horgospatak ), which was then part of the Principality of Transylvania . The noble name de Patak or Pataky is derived from the Hungarian place name of Strâmbu-Băiuț. His parents died early and he was brought up by the Jesuits , attended the Jesuit college in Cluj , studied in Szombathely , Vienna and Rome . He was ordained a priest on September 24, 1707 . In 1712 he went to Wallachia as a Romanian missionary of the Latin rite . On February 14th, 1717 he made his profession in the community of the Basilians of St. Exit Josaphat.

With the establishment of the diocese of Făgăraş on May 18, 1721 by Pope Innocent XIII. with the Apostolic Constitution Rationi congruit Ioan Giurgiu Patachi was appointed on June 15, 1717 as the first bishop of the new diocese of Făgăraş. It was consecrated on August 17, 1723 by Rafael Marković , OSBas the titular bishop of Plataea . On August 17, 1723 it was solemnly installed in the St. Nicholas Cathedral of Făgăraş.

After only four years in the episcopate, Bishop Ioan Giurgiu Patachi died at the age of only forty-five and was buried in Făgăraș.
