Socoltenango is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas .
The Municipio Socoltenango has about 17,000 inhabitants and an area of 634.9 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the eponymous Socoltenango , the second largest place Tzinil .
The name Socoltenango is derived from the Nahuatl and means "fortified place of jugs".

The Municipio Socoltenango is located south of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 400 m and 1400 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 48% limestone with 14% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are the Leptosol (41%) and Vertisol (16%). 36% of the community area is used for arable farming, 23% is used as pasture land, 11% is forested.
The most important river in the municipality is the Río San Vicente ; Parts of the La Angostura reservoir are also located in the Municipio Socoltenango.
The Municipio Socoltenango borders the Municipios Las Rosas , Comitán de Domínguez , Tzimol , La Trinitaria , Frontera Comalapa , Chicomuselo , La Concordia and Venustiano Carranza .

In the 2010 census, 17,125 people in 4,159 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 993 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 489 speakers from Tzeltal and 437 speakers from Tzotzil . Over 23 percent of the population was illiterate. 6,060 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 87% were men or 1.5% were unemployed. Over 37% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
In 2000 the economically active population was 4,676. Of these, 80.05% were employed in the primary sector, 5.62% in the secondary sector and 12.96% in the tertiary sector.
