Venustiano Carranza is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 61,000 inhabitants and is 1364.6 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Venustiano Carranza of the same name .
The name of the municipality is dedicated to the former Mexican president Venustiano Carranza . The place used to be called Copanahuastla , which comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the snakes".

The municipality of Venustiano Carranza is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 400 m and 2300 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 51% limestone with 14% silty sandstone and 12% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are Leptosol (41%), Phaeozem (17%), Luvisol and Vertisol (each 14%). About 54% of the community area is used for arable farming, 19% is forested, 17% is used as pasture land.
The Municipio Venustiano Carranza borders the Municipios Totolapa , Nicolás Ruiz , Teopisca , Amatenango del Valle , Las Rosas , Socoltenango , La Concordia , Villa Corzo , El Parral , Chiapa de Corzo , Emiliano Zapata and Acala .

In the 2010 census, 61,341 people in 14,459 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 12,855 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 7,448 speakers from Tzotzil and 4,656 speakers from Tzeltal . 25 percent of the population were illiterate. 23,005 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 78.5% were men and 4% were unemployed. 43% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
