Cacahoatán is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 44,000 inhabitants and is 174.8 km² in size. The largest town and administrative center is the eponymous Cacahoatán .
The name Cacahoatán comes from Nahuatl and means 'place of the peanuts'.

The municipality of Cacahoatán is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 300 m and 4064 m ( Tacaná volcano ). It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is determined by 48% andesite with 30% conglomerate rock and 19% granite ; The predominant soil types are Andosol (56%), Cambisol (30%) and Luvisol (12%). About 55% of the community area is used as pastureland, 37% is forested.
The municipality of Cacahoatán borders the municipalities of Tuxtla Chico , Unión Juárez and Tapachula and the Republic of Guatemala .

The 2010 census counted 43,811 people in 9,898 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 788 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , of which 723 were speakers of the Mam . A good 14 percent of the population was illiterate. 14,232 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 79% were men and 4.2% were unemployed. Over 23% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
