Ocotepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 11,800 inhabitants, the area of ​​the municipality is 61.3 km². The administrative seat and largest town is Ocotepec of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Ocotepec is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 400  m and 2100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 82% limestone with 18% andesite - breccia ; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (51.5%) and Phaeozem (48%). About 98% of the community area is forested.

The municipality of Ocotepec borders on the municipalities of Chapultenango , Tapalapa , Coapilla , Copainalá and Francisco León .

In the 2010 census, 11,878 people were counted in 2,287 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 10,582 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 9,818 speakers of the Zoque . A good 38 percent of the population were illiterate. 2,685 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 90% were men and 4.8% were unemployed. A good 63% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
