Chilón is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 112,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​1685.2 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the Chilón of the same name .

The name Chilón comes from the Tzeltal language and means "earth of hemp linen".

The municipality of Chilón is located northeast of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights of up to 2100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 72% limestone with 13% sandstone - lutite ; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (42%), Leptosol (38%) and Luvisol (13%). About 84% of the community area is forested, 8% is pasture land, 7% is used for agriculture.

The municipality of Chilón borders on the municipalities Palenque , Ocosingo , San Juan Cancuc , Sitalá , Pantelhó , Yajalón , Tumbalá and Salto de Agua .

The 2010 census counted 111,554 people in 19,192 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 96,567 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 89,854 speakers from the Tzeltal . A good 33 percent of the population was illiterate. 26,714 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 88% were men and 2.7% were unemployed. Over 70% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
