Tila is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has 71,432 inhabitants and is 803.9 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is Tila of the same name .

The name Tila comes from Nahuatl and means "in the black water".

The municipality of Tila is located in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 2200  m . It counts to over 99% in the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and to 0.7% in the southern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico ; it lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 68% limestone with 21% sandstone - lutite , 7% sandstone and 4% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (54%), Ferralsol , Leptosol (19% each) and Phaeozem (7%). About 50% of the community area is forested, 37% is used for agriculture, 13% is used for pasture land.

The municipality borders on the municipalities Salto de Agua , Tumbalá , Yajalón , Simojovel and Sabanilla as well as the state of Tabasco .

The 2010 census counted 71,432 people in 13,783 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 61,709 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 52,232 speakers from Chol and 6,240 from Tzeltal . 29 percent of the population were illiterate. 20,083 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 91% were men and 0.9% were unemployed. A good 69% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
