Chalchihuitán is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 14,000 inhabitants and is 185.9 km² in size. The administrative seat is the Chalchihuitán of the same name , while the largest place in the municipality is Chiquinshulum .
The name Chalchihuitán comes from the Nahuatl and means something like 'place with many precious stones'.
geography
The municipality of Chalchihuitán is located north of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 200 m and 2300 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 53% limestone with 42% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Planosol (67%) and Luvisol (20%). About 83% of the community area is forested, 12% is used for arable farming.
The municipality of Chalchihuitán borders on the municipalities of El Bosque , Simojovel , Pantelhó , Chenalhó and Larráinzar .
population
The 2010 census counted 14,027 people in 2,898 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 12,551 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 11,635 speakers of the Tzotzil . Almost 34 percent of the population were illiterate. 3,751 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 87% were men and 1.2% were unemployed. Almost 80% of the population lived in extreme poverty - the fifth highest figure in all of Mexico.
