Jitotol is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 18,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​236.4 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Jitotol of the same name .

The name Jitotol comes from Xitoltepeque , which means "place of the heavenly language / tongue" in Nahuatl .

geography

The municipality of Jitotol is located in the north-central part of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 500  m and 2400  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 53% limestone with 47% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are the Luvisol (31%), Phaeozem (26%), Planosol (23%) and Leptosol (20%). About 75% of the community area is forested, 24% is pasture land.

The municipality of Jitotol borders the municipalities of Rincón Chamula San Pedro , Pueblo Nuevo Solistahuacán , San Andrés Duraznal , Simojovel , El Bosque , Bochil , Pantepec and Rayón .

The 2010 census counted 18,683 people in 3,820 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 12,339 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 8,382 speakers of the Tzotzil and 3,006 speakers of the Zoque . A good 22 percent of the population was illiterate. 5,014 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 90% were men and 0.9% were unemployed. Over 64% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
