Altamirano is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas . The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Altamirano of the same name . The municipality has almost 30,000 inhabitants and covers an area of 958.3 km².
The municipality got its name in honor of the poet Ignacio Manuel Altamirano .
geography
The municipality of Altamirano is located east of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 200 m and 2100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 67% limestone with 22% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (44%) and Luvisol (35%). A good three quarters of the community area is forested.
The municipality of Altamirano borders the municipalities of Ocosingo , Las Margaritas , Oxchuc and Chanal .
population
The 2010 census counted 29,865 people in 5,265 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 16,244 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , 8,483 speakers of the Tzeltal language and 6,752 speakers of Tojolabal . A good 31 percent of the population were illiterate. 7,984 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 87% were men and 1.5% were unemployed. Two thirds of the population lived in extreme poverty.
