Amatenango del Valle is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality is located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas . The municipality has about 8,700 inhabitants and is 152.6 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Amatenango del Valle of the same name .

The name Amatenango comes partly from the Nahuatl and means 'fortification from Amatl trees', the Spanish addition del Valle means 'from the valley'.

The municipality Amatenango del Valle is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude between 800  m and 2600  m . It lies entirely in the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . 90% of the geology of the municipality is determined by limestone ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (73%), Alisol (24%) and Luvisol (12%). About 52% of the community area is forested, about 32% is used for arable farming.

The municipality of Amatenango del Valle borders the municipalities of Las Rosas , Venustiano Carranza , Teopisca , San Cristóbal de las Casas , Chanal and Comitán de Domínguez .

population

The 2010 census counted 8,728 people in 1,827 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 5823 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , 5448 of them speakers from the Tzeltal . About 33 percent of the population was illiterate. 3,271 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 66% were men or 1.6% were unemployed. 68% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
