Acapetahua is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . It is located in the south of the state on the Pacific Ocean , has 27,580 inhabitants and an area of ​​516.8 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is Acapetahua of the same name .

Acapetahua comes from Nahuatl and was called Acatl-Petatl-Hua when it was founded around 1500 .

The municipality of Acapetahua is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region at an altitude of less than 100  m . It lies entirely in the physiographic province of the Central American Cordillera and entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is determined to 64% by alluvions with 22% palustrian deposits; the predominant soil types are Cambisol (59%) and Solonchak (25%). About half of the community area is used as pastureland, about a quarter is taken up by mangroves .

The Municipio Acapetahua borders the Municipios Mapastepec , Acacoyagua , Escuintla , Villa Comaltitlán and Huixtla as well as the Pacific Ocean .

The 2010 census counted 27,580 people in 6,908 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 62 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . A good 18 percent of the population was illiterate. 9,891 residents were registered as economically active, of which around 80% were men and 2.8% were unemployed. A good 34% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
