Ostuacán is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 17,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​600.5 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the homonymous Ostuacán .

The name Ostuacán comes from the Nahuatl and means "tiger cave".

The municipality of Ostuacán is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas between sea level and 1000  m . 63% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and 37% to the southern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico ; it is entirely located in the Grijalva - Usumacinta hydrological region . The geology of the municipality is determined by 32% sandstone - lutite with 29% sandstone, 21% andesite - breccia and 13% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (78%), Phaeozem (7%) and Gleysol (6%). About 64% of the community area is taken up by pastureland, 21% is forested, 6% is used for agriculture.

The municipality of Ostuacán borders the municipalities of Pichucalco , Sunuapa , Francisco León , Tecpatán and Mezcalapa as well as the state of Tabasco .

population

The 2010 census counted 17,067 people in 3,653 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 616 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 537 speakers of the Zoque . Almost 19 percent of the population were illiterate. 5345 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 90% were men and 2.7% were unemployed. A good 25% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
