Larráinzar is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 20,000 inhabitants and an area of 149.3 km². County seat and largest city of Municipalities often isdas t also briefly Larráinzar called San Andrés Larráinzar .
Larráinzar used to be called Istacostoc, a Nahuatl word that means "white cave".

The municipality of Larráinzar is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 700 m and 2600 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 65% limestone with 30% sandstone - lutite and 4% silty sandstone; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (64%), Phaeozem (22%) and Alisol (13%). About 65% of the community area is forested, 34% is taken up by arable land.

Of these, 17,213 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 15,941 speakers of the Tzotzil . 26 percent of the population were illiterate. 5,323 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 81% were men and 0.75% were unemployed. 73% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
