Ocosingo is the largest municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . It is located in the eastern part of the state and is home to parts of the Montañas del Oriente and the Selva Lacandona . The name Ocosingo comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the black man".
The municipality has almost 200,000 inhabitants and an area of 9520.1 km². The administrative seat and largest city of the municipality is the eponymous Ocosingo . In the municipality of Ocosingo are the archaeological sites of Yaxchilán , Bonampak and Toniná , as well as several nature reserves. Ocosingo is the stronghold of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation , an indigenous guerrilla organization in Chiapas.

The municipality of Ocosingo is located in the east of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 2000 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 62% limestone with 25% sandstone - lutite , 8% silty sandstone and 4% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (28%), Leptosol (26%), Phaeozem (18%), Cambisol (10%) and Umbrisol (5%). About 83% of the community area is forested, 13% is pasture land.
The municipality of Ocosingo borders the municipalities of Palenque , Chilón , San Juan Cancuc , Oxchuc , Altamirano , Las Margaritas , Maravilla Tenejapa , Marqués de Comillas and Benemérito de las Américas, and the Republic of Guatemala . The Usumacinta River forms the border with Guatemala.

The 2010 census counted 198,877 people in 33,378 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 133,811 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 114,171 speakers from Tzeltal , 7,732 speakers from Chol , 1,529 speakers from Tzotzil , 990 speakers from Zoque and 849 speakers from Mayathan . Almost 28 percent of the population were illiterate. 50,581 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 86% were men and 1.4% were unemployed. Almost 60% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
