Francisco León is a municipality in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas . Today the municipality has about 7,000 inhabitants and an area of 210.8 km². The administrative seat is Rivera el Viejo Carmen (also Viejo Carmen Tonapac ), but the largest places in the municipality are San Miguel la Sardina and San José Maspac .
history
In the pre-Hispanic era the place was called Coalpitán , which means captive snakes in Nahuatl ; until 1934 the municipality was named Magdalenas Coalpitán . After the eruption of the El Chichón volcano in April 1982, in which the old capital Francisco León was destroyed, the municipality was evacuated and only rebuilt in June.

The Municipio Francisco León is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 100 m and 2700 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 76% sandstone - lutite with 13% andesite - breccia and 9% limestone ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (82%), Phaeozem (9%) and Acrisol (7%). About 56% of the community area is taken up by pastureland, 42% is forested.

In the 2010 census, 7000 people in 1314 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 4,846 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 4,598 speakers of the Zoque . Over 23 percent of the population was illiterate. 1831 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 95% were men and 3% were unemployed. A good 40% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
