Huehuetán is a municipality in the southwest of the Mexican state Chiapas . Da Municipio has about 33,000 inhabitants and an area of 304.3 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Huehuetán of the same name .
The name Huehuetán comes from the Nahuatl and means “place where there are very many old people”.

The municipality of Huehuetán is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas on the edge of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas in the Soconusco region at heights between 100 m and 800 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . 60% of the geology of the municipality is determined by alluvions with 27% tuff and 13% granite , the predominant soil types are Cambisol (34%), Luvisol (21%) and Acrisol (20%). About 48% of the community area is used for pasture land, 44% is used for agriculture.
The municipality of Huehuetán borders on the municipalities of Tapachula , Mazatán , Huixtla and Tuzantán .

In the 2010 census, 33,444 people in 8,060 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 82 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . Almost 17 percent of the population were illiterate. 10,876 residents were registered as economically active, 80% of whom were men and 1.8% were unemployed. 30% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
