Tumbalá is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 31,000 inhabitants and is 403.5 km² in size. The administrative center and largest place of the municipality is Tumbalá of the same name .

The name comes from Nahuatl and means "turned stick" or "the house of nine words".

The Cascadas de Agua Azul are located on the border with the municipality of Chilón .

geography

The municipality of Tumbalá is located north of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 1700  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 95% limestone with 4% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are the Luvisol (60%) and Phaeozem (38%). About two thirds of the community area is forested, 31% is used for arable farming.

The municipality of Tumbalá borders on the municipalities of Salto de Agua , Chilón , Yajalón and Tila .

In the 2010 census, 31,723 people in 5,990 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 28,152 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 25,688 speakers from the Chol and 964 speakers from the Tzeltal . Over 34 percent of the population was illiterate. 8,186 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 93% were men and 1.4% were unemployed. Over 65% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The Municipio Totolapa comprises 112 inhabited localidades , of which only the main town is classified as urban by the INEGI . Four towns had a population of over 1000 in the 2010 census, 56 towns had fewer than 100 inhabitants. The biggest places are:
