Acala is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas located municipality in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas . The municipality has almost 29,000 inhabitants and is 295.6 km² in size. The administrative seat is Acala of the same name .

Acala is a pre-Hispanic place and the meaning of the word is place of canoes or place of dugout canoes .

The municipality of Acacoyagua borders the municipalities of Zinacantán , San Lucas , Chiapilla , Venustiano Carranza , Totolopa and Chiapa de Corzo .
