Oxchuc is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 43,000 inhabitants and an area of 417.9 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Oxchuc .
The name comes from the Tzeltal and means 'three knots'.
geography
The municipality of Oxchuc is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes between 1000 m and 2500 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . 97% of the geology of the municipality is determined by limestone ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (57%), Alisol (29%) and Luvisol (14%). About 69% of the community area is forested, 28% is used for arable farming.
The municipality of Oxchuc borders the municipalities of Ocosingo , Altamirano , Chanal , Huixtán , Tenejapa and San Juan Cancuc .

The 2010 census counted 43,350 people in 8,240 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 38,804 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 36,175 speakers from the Tzeltal . Over 21 percent of the population was illiterate. 11,605 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 90% were men and 0.8% were unemployed. 62% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
