Tapachula is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region . The municipality has about 320,000 inhabitants and an area of 983.6 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the city Tapachula de Córdova y Ordóñez , also known as Tapachula for short .
geography
The municipality of Tapachula is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between sea level and 2700 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is determined to 45% by alluvions with 23% tuff , 14% andesite and 10% granite ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (40%), Phaeozem (34%) and Acrisol (10%). About 67% of the community area is used for arable farming, 16% is used for pasture land, and 8% is forested.
The municipality of Tapachula borders the municipalities of Huehuetán , Tuzantán , Motozintla , Cacahoatán , Tuxtla Chico , Frontera Hidalgo , Suchiate and Mazatán as well as the Republic of Guatemala and the Pacific .

In the 2010 census, 320,451 people were counted in 81,757 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 4,310 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , of which 3,335 were speakers of Mam and 328 speakers of Zapotec . A good nine percent of the population was illiterate. 126,879 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 66% were men and 2.8% were unemployed. 17.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The municipality of Tapachula comprises 507 inhabited localidades , of which the main town as well as Puerto Madero, Vida Mejor I, Álvaro Obregón, Los Cafetales, Raymundo Enríquez and Carrillo Puerto are classified as urban by the INEGI .
