Palenque is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 111,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​2897 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is Palenque of the same name .

The archaeological site of Palenque and the Palenque National Park are located in the municipality of Palenque.

The municipality of Palenque is located in the northeast of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights of up to 900  m . 53% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and 47% to the southern coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 37% limestone with 36% sandstone and 16% sandstone lutite ; The predominant soil types are Leptosol (23%), Luvisol (21%), Cambisol (16%), Gleysol (15%), Regosol (13%) and Phaeozem (12%). About 55% of the municipal area is pasture land, 39% is forested.

The municipality of Palenque borders the municipalities Catazajá , La Libertad , Chilón , Ocosingo and Salto de Agua as well as the state of Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala .

The 2010 census counted 110,918 people in 25,263 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 45,412 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 29,432 speakers from the Chol and 13,164 speakers from the Tzeltal . Almost 19 percent of the population were illiterate. 36,146 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 80% were men and 1.7% were unemployed. 38.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
