La Independencia is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 41,000 inhabitants and an area of 516.1 km². The administrative center is La Independencia of the same name , while the largest towns in the municipality are El Triunfo and Venustiano Carranza .
The name of this place comes from Spanish and means "independence".
The municipality has a share in the Lagunas de Montebello National Park .
geography
The municipality of La Independencia is located in the southeast of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 700 m and 1900 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 76% limestone with 17% alluvion and 5% silty sandstone ; The predominant soil types are Leptosol (26%), Luvisol (20%), Phaeozem (18%), Acrisol (15%) and Chernozem (13%). About 61% of the community area is forested, a good 25% is used by arable land, and 12% is used as pasture land.
The municipality of La Independencia borders the municipalities of Las Margaritas , La Trinitaria and Comitán de Domínguez .

The 2010 census counted 41,266 people in 9,046 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 1,796 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 811 speakers of the Chuj , 383 speakers of the Kanjobal and 202 speakers of the Tojolabal . A good 16.5 percent of the population was illiterate. 13,829 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 92.5% were men and 1.2% were unemployed. A good 49% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
