Mitontic is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has 11,157 inhabitants and an area of ​​36.7 km². The administrative center is the Mitontic of the same name , while the most populous place is Chalam .

geography

The Municipio Mitontic is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 1500  m and 2400  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 81% limestone with 19% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Alisol (66%), Luvisol (20%) and Leptosol (12%). About 58% of the community area is forested, 41% is used for arable farming.

The Municipio Mitontic borders the Municipios Chenalhó , Tenejapa and Chamula .

In the 2010 census, 11,157 people were counted in 2,062 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 9,877 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 9,099 speakers of the Tzotzil . Almost 47 percent of the population were illiterate. 1,639 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 89% were men and 3.7% were unemployed. Over 71% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
