Chenalhó is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 36,000 inhabitants and an area of 252.2 km². The largest place of the municipality and administrative seat is the Chenalhó of the same name .
The name Chenalhó comes from the Tzotzil and means "cave water".

The municipality of Chenalhó is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 300 m and 2400 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 43% sandstone - lutite with 33% silty sandstone and 24% limestone ; The predominant soil types are Luvisol (71%) and Alisol (15%). Around 56% of the community area is used for agriculture, 43% is forested.
The municipality of Chenalhó borders the municipalities of Pantelhó , San Juan Cancuc , Tenejapa , Mitontic , Chamula , Aldama , Larráinzar and Chalchihuitán .

The 2010 census counted 36,111 people in 6,833 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 31,788 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , 27,926 speakers of the Tzotzil and 1,653 speakers of the Tzeltal . A good 34 percent of the population was illiterate. 11,049 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which more than 76% were men or 1.1% were unemployed. A good 72% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
