Bochil is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 31,000 inhabitants and is 380.03 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town is Bochil of the same name .

The name Bochil is derived from the Tzotzil term boch , which refers to the fruit of a calabash tree .

geography

The municipality Bochil is located in the north-central part of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 300 m and 2300 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 59% limestone with 41% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (43%), Regosol (26%) and Luvisol (22%). About 86% of the community area is forested, about 10% is used for agriculture.

The Municipio Bochil borders on the Municipios Coapilla , Pantepec , Jitotol , El Bosque , Larráinzar , Ixtapa , Soyaló and Chicoasén .

In the 2010 census, 30,642 people were counted in 6,352 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 14,193 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 13,153 speakers of the Tzotzil . A good 20 percent of the population was illiterate. 9,410 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 82% were men and 4.4% were unemployed. A good 51% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
