Chicoasén is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 5000 inhabitants and an area of 116 km². The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is the Chicoasén of the same name .
The name Chicoasén goes back to the Nahuatl name Chicoasentepek , in English 'six places' or 'six hills'.
The Manuel M. Torres Dam lies on the border with the Municipio Osumacinta .
geography
The municipality of Chicoasén is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 100 m and 1300 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 72% sandstone - lutite with 28% limestone ; The predominant soil types are the Leptosol (59%) and Regosol (28%). About 93% of the community area is forested.
The municipality of Chicoasén borders on the municipalities of Bochil , Copainalá , Soyaló , Coapilla , Osumacinta and San Fernando .

In the 2010 census, 5018 people in 1261 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 400 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 359 speakers of the Tzotzil . Over 13 percent of the population was illiterate. 1675 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 86% were men or 5.9% were unemployed. A good 23% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
