El Bosque is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 18,500 inhabitants and is 159.7 km² in size. The largest place of the municipality and administrative seat is the El Bosque of the same name .

From its foundation in 1915 to 1934, the municipality was called San Juan Bautista .

geography

The municipality of El Bosque is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at heights between 300  m and 2000  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 51% sandstone - lutite with 48% limestone ; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (55%) and Planosol (44%). About 69% of the community area is forested, 17% is used for arable farming, 14% is pasture land.

The municipality of El Bosque borders the municipalities of Simojovel , Chalchihuitán , Larráinzar , Bochil and Jitotol .

The 2010 census counted 18,559 people in 3,617 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 15,864 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 14,878 speakers of the Tzotzil . Almost 30 percent of the population were illiterate. 4,717 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 93% were men or 0.55% were unemployed. Over 63% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
