Coapilla is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 8,400 inhabitants and is 155.5 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest town is the Coapilla of the same name .
The name Coapilla comes from Nahuatl and means "crown of a hill".
geography
The Municipio Coapilla is located northwest of the center of the Mexican state Chiapas. It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 49% limestone with 26% andesite - breccia and 25% sandstone - lutite ; The predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (46%), Luvisol (33%) and Leptosol (21%). About 85% of the community area is forested, 12% is pasture land.
The municipality of Coapilla borders on the municipalities of Ocotepec , Tapalapa , Pantepec , Bochil , Chicoasén and Copainalá .

In the 2010 census, 8444 people were counted in 1971 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 1,193 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 1,043 speakers of the Tzotzil . A good 20 percent of the population was illiterate. 2,688 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 86% were men or 0.6% were unemployed. 47% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
