Unión Juárez is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has almost 14,000 inhabitants and is 62.3 km² in size. The administrative seat is the Unión Juárez of the same name , while the largest place in the municipality is Santo Domingo .

The name of the municipality is dedicated to the Mexican President Benito Juárez .

geography

The Municipio Unión Juárez is located in the south of the Mexican state of Chiapas in the Soconusco region at heights between 500  m and over 4000  m on the Tacaná volcano . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is determined by 36% andesite with 33% granite and 29% conglomerate rock ; The predominant soil types are Andosol (80%) and Cambisol (20%). Over 80% of the community area is used for arable farming, around 10% is forested.

The Municipio Unión Juárez borders the Municipio Cacahoatán and the Republic of Guatemala .

The 2010 census counted 14,089 people in 3,215 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 144 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 136 speakers of the Mam . 15 percent of the population were illiterate. 4,256 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 84% were men and 3.6% were unemployed. A good 25% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
