Escuintla is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 30,000 inhabitants and an area of 418.4 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Escuintla of the same name .
The name Escuintla comes from Nahuatl and means "place of the dogs".
geography
The Municipio Escuintla is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas between sea level and 2700 m in the Soconusco region . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and is almost entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas , 0.05% is in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 69% granite with 10% alluvion and 9% tonalite ; The predominant soil types are Acrisol (31%), Regosol (24%), Leptosol (18%) and Cambisol (12%). About 47% of the community area is forested, 40% is used for pasture land, 12% is used for agriculture.
The municipality of Escuintla borders on the municipalities of Capitán Luis Ángel Vidal , Siltepec , Motozintla , Huixtla , Villa Comaltitlán , Acapetahua and Acacoyagua .

The 2010 census counted 30,068 people in 6,851 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 394 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 320 speakers of the Mam . Almost 15 percent of the population were illiterate. 9,537 residents were registered as economically active, of which 81% were men and 3.5% were unemployed. Almost 34% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
