Nicolás Ruiz is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has a good 4,000 inhabitants and an area of 29.6 km². The administrative seat and largest town of the municipality is Nicolás Ruiz of the same name .

The name honors Nicolás Ruiz Maldonado , a former governor of Chiapas.

geography

The municipality Nicolás Ruiz is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 500 m and 1000 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 83% silty sandstone determined with 7% tuff , 6% conglomerate rock and 4% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (82%) and Phaeozem (18%). About 52% of the community area is used for arable farming, 23% is forested, 20% is pasture land.

The Municipio Nicolás Ruiz borders on the Municipios Totolapa and Venustiano Carranza .

In the 2010 census, 4317 people in 895 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 53 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 50 speakers of the Tzotzil . Almost 22 percent of the population was illiterate. 1247 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 92% were men and 10% were unemployed. A good 55% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
