Santiago el Pinar is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 3,200 inhabitants and an area of ​​16.6 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Santiago el Pinar of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Santiago el Pinar is centrally located in the Mexican state of Chiapas at altitudes between 800  m and 2100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 45.6% silty sandstone with 41.8% sandstone lutite and 12.6% limestone ; the predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (87.5%) and Alisol (12.5%). A good 60% of the community area is forested, 37% are used for agriculture.

The municipality of Santiago el Pinar borders on the municipalities of Aldama and Larráinzar .

population

In the 2010 census, 3245 people in 641 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 2815 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 2606 speakers of the Tzotzil . Over 38 percent of the population were illiterate. 679 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 95% were men and 0.6% were unemployed. Almost 70% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
