Villa Comaltitlán is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has 27,899 inhabitants and is 447 km² in size. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Villa Comaltitlán .
The name Comaltitlán comes from the Nahuatl and means "place of the ceramists".
In the south of the municipality there are parts of the Reserva de la Biósfera "La Encrucijada" nature reserve .
geography
The municipality of Villa Comaltitlán is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas in the Soconusco region between sea level and 1000 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas . The geology of the municipality is determined to 43% by alluvion with 29% lacustric deposits and 21% granite ; The predominant soil types are Cambisol (42%), Gleysol (15%), Regosol (14%) and Phaeozem (10%). Around 32% of the municipal area is used for arable farming or serves as pastureland.
The Municipio borders on the Municipios Escuintla , Huixtla and Acapetahua .

The 2010 census counted 27,899 people in 6,604 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 179 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 94 speakers from the Tzeltal . 16.6 percent of the population were illiterate. 9,112 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of whom over 82% were men or 1.1% were unemployed. 37% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
