Chamula is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 77,000 inhabitants and covers 345.7 km². The largest place of the municipality and administrative seat is the Chamula of the same name (3,329 inhabitants, also San Juan Chamula ).

The municipality of Chamula is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 1200 m and 3000 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 69% by limestone with about 11% each of tuff and sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (57%), Alisol (17%), Phaeozem (13%) and Leptosol (12%). About 53% of the community area is forested, 47% is used for arable farming.
The municipality borders on the municipalities Larráinzar , Aldama , Chenalhó , Mitontic , Tenejapa , San Cristóbal de las Casas , Zinacantán and Ixtapa .

The 2010 census counted 76,941 people in 16,083 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 69,475 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , 65,177 of them speakers of the Tzotzil . More than 42 percent of the population was illiterate. 25,029 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which just under 69% were men or 2.2% were unemployed. Almost 70% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
