Chanal is a municipality in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 10,800 inhabitants and an area of 408.1 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Chanal of the same name .
The name of the community means "wise one who teaches".
geography
The Municipio Chanal is located in the center of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 1100 m and 2800 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and is entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined to 92% by limestone ; the predominant soil type is Luvisol (89%). About 64% of the community area is forested, 21% is used for pasture land, 14% is used for arable farming.
The Municipio Chanal borders on the Municipios Huixtán , Las Margaritas , Oxchuc , Altamirano , Amatenango del Valle , San Cristóbal de las Casas and Comitán de Domínguez .

The 2010 census counted 10,817 people in 1,773 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 9,638 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , 8,841 of them from the Tzeltal . A good 34 percent of the population was illiterate. 2,715 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of whom over 78% were men or 0.07% were unemployed. Almost 70% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
