Sunuapa is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The name of the place comes from the Nahuatl and means "river of the Jonotes " ( jonote is the name of a fruit).

The municipality is 78.6 km² and has a little over 2,000 inhabitants. The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Sunuapa of the same name .

geography

The municipality of Sunuapa is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 900  m . 99% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas , the rest to the southern coastal plains of the Gulf of Mexico ; it lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 86% sandstone with 11% sandstone lutite ; The predominant soil types are Acrisol (89%) and Luvisol (11%). About 67% of the community area is used as pastureland, 25% is forested, 5% is used for agriculture.

The Municipio Sunuapa borders on the Municipios Pichucalco and Ostuacán .

In the 2010 census, 2235 people in 469 residential units were counted in the municipality. Seven of them were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . A good 20 percent of the population was illiterate. 703 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 83.5% were men and 4.4% were unemployed. 36% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
