La Libertad is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 5000 inhabitants and an area of ​​458.1 km². The administrative seat and most populous place of the municipality is La Libertad of the same name .

The name of this place comes from Spanish and means "freedom".

The municipality of La Libertad is located in the northeast of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the southern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 82% sandstone with 14% alluvion ; The predominant soil types are Arenosol (56%), Gleysol (22%) and Cambisol (21%). About 81% of the community area is used as pastureland, 9% is forested.

The municipality of La Libertad borders the municipality of Palenque and the state of Tabasco .

In the 2010 census, 4974 people were counted in 1411 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 115 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 69 speakers of the Chol . A good 16 percent of the population was illiterate. 1,756 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 85% were men or 1.4% were unemployed. 22.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
