Sabanilla is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 25,000 inhabitants and an area of 250.8 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Sabanilla of the same name .
The name comes from the Tzeltal and means "fast brook".
geography
The municipality Sabanilla is located in the north of the Mexican state Chiapas at an altitude of less than 1900 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is determined by 52% limestone with 45% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Luvisol (60%) and Leptosol (34%). About 59% of the community area is forested, 23% is used for agriculture, 18% is used as pasture land.
The municipality of Sabanilla borders on the municipalities of Tila , Simojovel and Huitiupán and the state of Tabasco .

In the 2010 census, 25,187 people in 5,159 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 18,043 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 15,144 speakers of Chol and 1,865 speakers of Tzotzil . A good 24 percent of the population was illiterate. 6,849 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 93% were men or 1.5% were unemployed. A good 66% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
