El Porvenir is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . The municipality has about 13,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​83 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is El Porvenir de Velasco Suárez .

The municipality of El Porvenir is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 1200  m and 3100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . 90% of the geology of the municipality is determined by silty sandstone ; the predominant soil types are regosol (65%) and acrisol (33%). About 41% of the community area is forested, 40% is used for arable farming, 18% is used for pasture land.

The municipality of El Porvenir borders the municipalities of Mazapa de Madero , Bejucal de Ocampo , La Grandeza , Siltepec and Motozintla .

In the 2010 census, 13,201 people in 2,181 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 804 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 792 speakers of the Mam . A good 13 percent of the population was illiterate. 3,600 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 93% were men or 0.3% were unemployed. Over 38% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
