Mapastepec is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas . Mapastepec has about 44,000 inhabitants and an area of 1223.9 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the mapastepec of the same name .
The name Mapastepec comes from the Nahuatl (originally Mapachtepec ) and means "mountain of raccoons ". The municipality has a share in the biosphere reserves El Triunfo and La Encrucijada .
geography
The municipality of Mapastepec is located in the south of the Mexican state Chiapas between sea level and 2800 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Cordillera Centroamericana , lies partly in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and partly in the coastal plain. It is 96% in the hydrological region of Costa de Chiapas , the rest in the Grijalva - Usumacinta region . The geology of the municipality is determined by granite to over 47% with 43% alluvion ; the predominant soil types are Cambisol (36%), Regosol (22%) and Leptosol (20%). Not quite half of the municipal area is taken up by arable land, 42% is forested.
The municipality of Mapastepec borders the municipalities Acapetahua , Acacoyagua , Capitán Luis Ángel Vidal , Montecristo de Guerrero , Ángel Albino Corzo , La Concordia and Pijijiapan as well as the Pacific .
population
The 2010 census counted 43,913 people in 10,840 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 132 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 41 speakers of Zapotec . A good 16 percent of the population was illiterate. 15,442 residents were registered as economically active, of which a good 78% were men and 2.5% were unemployed. A good 33% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
