Rayón is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 9,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​67.9 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Rayón of the same name .

The name Rayón honors Ignacio López Rayón , a person who participated in the Mexican War of Independence.

geography

The municipality of Rayón is located in the north-central part of the Mexican state Chiapas at altitudes between 900  m and 2100  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 63% limestone , 30% andesite - breccia and 7% sandstone - lutite ; the predominant soil types are Leptosol (51%), Luvisol (26%) and Phaeozem (4%). About 64% of the community area is taken up by pastureland, 20% is used for agriculture, 14% is forested.

The municipality of Rayón borders on the municipalities of Tapilula , Rincón Chamula San Pedro , Jitotol and Pantepec .

In the 2010 census, 9002 people in 1869 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 2,496 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 2,165 speakers of the Zoque . A good 23 percent of the population was illiterate. 2807 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which almost 81% were men and 5% were unemployed. Almost 49% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
