Tapalapa is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . Its administrative seat and at the same time the largest town is the Tapalapa of the same name . The municipality has about 4,100 inhabitants and is 66.3 km² in size.

geography

The municipality Tapalapa is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas between 800  m and 2500  m altitude. It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and belongs entirely to the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the Municipalities is 69% of andesite - breccia determined at 31% limestone ; the predominant soil types are the Phaeozem (72%) and Luvisol (28%). More than 98% of the community area is forested.

Tapalapa borders on the Municipios Chapultenango , Pantepec , Coapilla and Ocotepec .

population

In the 2010 census, 4121 people were counted in 996 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 3,661 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 3,470 speakers of the Zoque . A good 16 percent of the population was illiterate. 1195 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 80% were men and 5% were unemployed. Almost 45% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

places

The Municipio Tapalapa comprises 17 inhabited localidades , of which only the main town is classified as urban by the INEGI . Seven places had a population of over 200 in the 2010 census, eight places had fewer than 100 inhabitants. The largest towns are Tapalapa (1940 inhabitants) and Mazono (410 inhabitants).
