Pantepec is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chiapas . The municipality has about 11,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​106 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Pantepec .

The name comes from Nahuatl and means "put on mountain".

The municipality Pantepec is located in the northwest of the Mexican state Chiapas at heights between 800  m and 2500  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and lies entirely in the hydrological region of Grijalva - Usumacinta . The geology of the municipality is 64% limestone with 30% andesite - breccia ; the predominant soil types are Phaeozem (40%), Leptosol and Luvisol (30% each). About 65% of the community area is forested, 32% is taken up by pastureland.

The municipality Pantepec borders on the municipalities Chapultenango , Ixhuatán , Tapilula , Rayón , Jitotol , Bochil , Coapilla and Tapalapa .

In the 2010 census, 10,870 people in 2,364 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 4,548 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 4,183 speakers of the Zoque . 29 percent of the population were illiterate. 3,112 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 86% were men and 3.4% were unemployed. A good 52% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
