The Near Islands ("near islands") are the westernmost archipelago of the Alëuts . The Near Islands belonging to Alaska ( USA ) are the Alëuten group of islands closest to the Russian mainland and were therefore given this name by the Russian explorers ( Russian "Ближние острова" ).

The largest of the Near Islands are Attu and Agattu Island . In addition to a few rocky islands in the channel between Attu and Agattu, the other important islands in this group are the Semichi Islands in the northeast, of which Alaid , Nizki and Shemya are worth mentioning. About 30 km east-southeast of Shemya Island are some rock islands, the Ingenstrem Rocks . The total land area of the Near Islands is 1143.785 km² and a total of 47 people populate the islands according to the 2000 census. Only the island of Shemya is still inhabited. The island of Attu, which was also inhabited before, has been abandoned since 2010.
