Gabrijel Stupica (born March 21, 1913 Dražgoše , Železniki municipality , Austria-Hungary ; † December 19, 1990 in Ljubljana , SFR Yugoslavia ) was a Yugoslav painter . He was one of the most important representatives of abstract painting after the Second World War .

Gabrijel Stupica attended the II. Realgymnasium in Ljubljana . From 1931 to 1933 he studied drawing and from 1933 to 1937 painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and lived there until 1946. Stupica himself mentions visits to a Titian exhibition in Venice in 1937 and an exhibition of masterpieces from the Prado ( Madrid ) 1939 in Geneva as events that had a strong artistic influence on him. In 1946 Stupica moved from Zagreb to Ljubljana. In the same year he was appointed professor of painting at the newly founded Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where he taught until his retirement in 1977. After the end of the Second World War, he went on two long study trips (1950 and 1955) to Paris .

His art received international attention and recognition in the 1950s. Gabrijel Stupica was a participant in the 1952 and 1958 Venice Biennale in the Yugoslav pavilion and in 1959 a participating artist in the documenta II in Kassel . In 1968 he participated in a special exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Gabrijel Stupica was a member of the artist group "69" .

He received numerous Yugoslav awards and prizes:

  • 1977: AVNOJ Prize (" AVNOJ " = Antifascist Council for the National Liberation of Yugoslavia )

In the 1990s his works were shown at important exhibitions in Europe (among others):

Gabrijel Stupica leaves behind a diverse oeuvre of paintings (many portraits and self-portraits ), gouaches , watercolors , drawings and graphics .
