The Islands of Four Mountains are a group of islands in the Alëuts in the US state of Alaska .

geography

Amukta Island , Chagulak Island , Yunaska Island (173 km²), Herbert Island , Carlisle Island , Chuginadak Island (167 km²), Uliaga Island and Kagamil lie in the more than 80 km long chain of islands between the Andreanof Islands in the west and the Fox Islands in the east Iceland . It is from the straits Amukta pass and Samalga Pass to the west and east.

The islands have a total area of 545,596 km² and are not inhabited all year round.

history

The Aleutians , who have inhabited these islands for 5000 years, called them "Unigun" (German: "Birthplace of the winds"), because howling storms are not uncommon here. The Aleutians considered these islands, especially Kagamil Island , to be the place of origin of their people. They buried their dead here, mummified , which indicates the spiritual importance of this place.

Because of the four important volcanoes Mount Cleveland , Mount Carlisle , Mount Kagamil and Mount Herbert , the Russian researchers named these islands "Islands of the Four Hills" ( Russian четырехсопочные острова , tschetyrjechsopotschnye ostrowa ).

The current name was created in 1894 on the USS Concord and published in 1895 by the US Navy Hydrography Office (Chart 8).

fauna

On the Islands of Four Mountains, among other things, bearded beeches breed, the smallest of the alkenbirds after the dwarf alkali .
