Life

As the son of a surgeon, Theissing first studied medicine at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University and the Eberhard Karls University . In 1921 he became a member of the Catholic student association AV Guestfalia Tübingen in the Cartell Association of Catholic German student associations . He moved to the University of Cologne and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität . In 1926 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . In Bonn he worked at the Medical Polyclinic , the Dermatology Clinic and the ENT Clinic under Karl Grünberg . In addition to his clinical work, he took over the management of the histological laboratory at an early age .

In 1934 he became chief physician at the ENT clinic of the Ludwigshafen municipal hospital . In 1960 he followed the call of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen to her chair for ENT medicine. Here he had the opportunity to redesign the ENT clinic with the construction of a new operating and bed wing. He also took on various tasks in the medical faculty . He was dean in 1964 and a member of the university's administrative committee from 1965 to 1969. 1969–1971 he represented the faculty at the Medical Faculty Day .

science

Theissing completed his habilitation at Grünberg at the age of 28 . The problem of Koch's disease , also in relation to larynx and lymph node tuberculosis, then represented a scientific focus of his life's work. Theissing reported on his research results in 20 publications in this sector alone. In the handbook of tuberculosis by Klein, Kleinschmidt and Ühlinger, he summarized his experiences in this area.

Theissing also proved to be an expert in the areas of other, specific ENT diseases, namely syphilis , actinomycosis and toxoplasmosis . His two-volume operating theory became particularly well-known and enjoyed great popularity among ENT doctors who were in training and who were already trained.

Gerhard Theissing also received international recognition in other areas of his subject, for example in larynx surgery . Here he indicated surgical modifications and also promoted plastic larynx surgery. In addition to 16 publications on new, own surgical possibilities, he has presented his basic research in ten further experimental and nine histological papers. In total, his scientific publications comprise 131 titles.

Bodies

Gerhard Theissing made his knowledge and experience available to a wide variety of specialist bodies with great personal commitment. He was from 1950 to 1968 a member of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association, since 1952 a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Medical Association and from 1953 to 1963 board member of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology, temporarily also its president. Finally, from 1965 to 1971, he was chairman of the association of specialist representatives in ENT medicine at West German universities. The German Medical Association honored him with the medal for services to advanced medical training .

“Theissing was a passionate university lecturer. In the lecture hall, not even the chronically tired could be angry with him for their sleep loss. They always sat with their ears up in his lectures, if only so as not to overhear any of his bonmots. Because of his motherly wit, but also because of his truthfulness, his sense of the realities of life and his open-mindedness for the honest and the new, it was easy for him to appear as primus inter pares with his pupils and students, to whom he gave an excellent education, and yet to be the boss.
