The Rat Islands (German " Rat Islands ") are a group of islands in the Aleutian Islands in the US state of Alaska . They lie between Buldir Island and the Near Islands in the west and the Amchitka Pass and the Andreanof Islands in the east. The largest islands in the group are from west to east: Kiska , Little Kiska , Segula , Rat Island or Kryssei, Khvostof , Davidof , Little Sitkin , Amchitka and Semisopochnoi . The total land area of the uninhabited Council Islands is 934.594 km². On the islands there are among other things breeding colonies of bearded beeches , the smallest alken bird after the dwarf alkali .

The name Rat Islands is the English translation of the name that captain Friedrich Benjamin von Lütke gave the archipelago in 1827 when he visited the Aleutian Islands on his circumnavigation of the world.

Because of its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire , violent earthquakes often occur here.
